Essure Hysteroscopic Sterilization Q&A

What is Essure?

Essure hysteroscopic sterilization is an irreversible birth control treatment that collaborates with your body’s natural processes to prevent pregnancy from ever happening again or at all. It’s easily performed right in Dr. Jain’s office in under an hour.

Essure itself is a fiber, copper, titanium, and metal coil that goes into your fallopian tube, the conduit for your eggs to reach your uterus.

What should I expect during an Essure placement appointment?

The procedure is performed in a private room in Dr. Jain’s clean and comfortable office. After you receive a local anesthesia to prevent pain, Dr. Jain uses a slender hose called a hysteroscope to reach to the fallopian tube so she can easily place the coil in position. The procedure requires no incisions and feels similar to a pelvic exam.

The placement only takes about 15 minutes. Dr. Jain and her caring team tend to you for about 45 minutes to make sure there are no complications. You should be able to return to your normal activities the next day.

Are there side effects with Essure?

Essure is a popular choice because it’s tested by the manufacturer to be 99% effective. However, there are a few side effects to consider as you evaluate if the procedure is right for you, such as:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Movement of the coils
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Fainting
  • Vomiting
  • Allergic reaction
  • Hypersensitivity

How long does it take for Essure to prevent pregnancy?

Because it takes a few months for your tissues to grow around the Essure coils and fully block the fallopian tubes, Dr. Jain recommends coming in to test the viability of the device for pregnancy prevention after three months.

In general, most people can depend on Essure for birth control around this same time. Don’t use Essure exclusively until you know for sure that it’s working fully.

Who is a candidate for Essure hysteroscopic sterilization?

If you meet the following guidelines, you’re a candidate for Essure:

  • You have no desire to have children
  • You have completed your family
  • You’d like a non-surgical, lasting birth control option
  • You don’t want hormone-based birth control

Dr. Jain is passionate about all aspects of your health and uses her extensive experience to help guide you through your birth control options. Call the office or use the online scheduling tool to book a consultation.
