Labioplasty Q&A

What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the length of the labia minora, the smaller inner folds of the vulva.

The goal of the surgery is to reduce the size of the labia minora to prevent it from hanging below the labia majora and alleviate discomfort during activities, including sex. Treatment may also be an option for women who are self-conscious of their vaginal appearance.

During your initial consultation, you should discuss with Dr. Jain any pain or discomfort you feel, as well as any other symptoms you experience. Dr. Jain also discusses your cosmetic goals to determine if labiaplasty is right for you.

What happens during a labiaplasty?

During most labiaplasty procedures, Dr. Jain removes excess tissue from the labia minora to reduce its size and recontour its shape.

Dr. Jain can also reduce extra clitoral folds to improve the overall appearance of your vagina.

What is recovery like after a labiaplasty?

Dr. Jain can administer either a local or general anesthetic for your comfort during surgery. Following the procedure, you can expect swelling and some pain that you can treat with over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers and ice packs.

Swelling can occur for up to six weeks after treatment. After that, you can expect to see optimal results of your labiaplasty with a shorter labia that no longer hangs down outside of your vaginal lips.

You should avoid wearing tampons or having sex for up to six weeks after your procedure to ensure effective recovery.

Does labiaplasty carry any risks?

As with most surgeries, labiaplasty does increase your risk of infection and bleeding. Surgery can also lead to scarring near the vaginal opening and pain with sex. Chronic vaginal dryness may also be a side effect of surgery.

Dr. Jain discusses the benefits versus the risks of labiaplasty during your consultation, so you can make the best decision for your health.

What are the benefits of labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty can alleviate labial discomfort and pain that occurs when your labia minora catches on your clothing or is irritated during physical activities, such as riding a bike or having sex.

You can also enjoy more confidence in the appearance of your vagina, especially when wearing a bathing suit or tight-fitting pants.
